This duplex residence is located within a converted 19th century granite merchant’s building on the edge of downtown Manhattan with views of the South Street Seaport and historic Fulton Street Fish Market. The design evolved from a study of the residential program, the 19th century building, and tall-masted ships. The design draws from analogies made between ship/yacht to house/apartment. The maritime history of the context provides for the reinterpreted materiality and textural nature of the design. The aesthetic was a result of a programmatic exploration into the fundamental use of space and materials.
