Le réaménagement de la place Vauquelin découle du plan directeur de la Cité administrative réalisé par Lemay en 2016. Les orientations issues de ce plan ont permis à la nouvelle place Vauquelin de préserver et de mettre en valeur l’héritage urbain à travers l’innovation et l’accessibilité. Cette place est le point culminant d’un corridor qui unit le centre-ville contemporain à l’héritage historique du Vieux-Montréal. Ce lieu de transit est à la fois une vitrine de contemplation sur l’évolution de Montréal et le cœur de la Cité administrative que se partagent citoyens, touristes, employés, élus et manifestants. Une attention particulière a été portée à la préservation de vestiges témoignant du passé du site, des archéologues ont été présents pendant les phases de conception et de construction. Par l’implantation d’un système de chauffage radiant, la place Vauquelin devient la première place chauffée à Montréal.
