The architecture and landscape design proposal was developed in collaboration with Pelletier de Fontenay, Montreal, Jodoin Lamarre Pratte and Atelier Le Balto, Berlin-Le Havre. The new exhibition building is situated in the Botanical Garden of Montreal. The design for the new Insectarium overturns the typological and museological expectations of a natural history museum, in favour of an organic design where visitors can be immersed in the world of insects. The new Insectarium creates an experience for the visitor that is based on the concept of metamorphosis. The exhibition route, through its different moments, encourages a shift of perspective in which humans are “downsized” to better appreciate the world as an insect would experience. It reflects a conception of nature that is no longer presented as a resource to control and exploit, but as a fragile system to understand and preserve. To this end, architecture intentionally recedes in the background, leaving the central act to nature — both around and inside the museum.
